Beyond Ophthalmology, Beyond the Clinic

The Museum of Vision proudly presents Beyond Ophthalmology, Beyond the Clinic celebrating the lives of ophthalmologists who have achieved fame in professions outside of medicine including literature, art and sports.

Ophthalmologists have a passion for their specialty and a strong desire to help patients. Yet throughout history we can also find physicians who felt a desire to put aside their medical training and pursue an unrelated career. This exhibit features ophthalmologists whose extraordinary efforts have been recognized by their colleagues – both in ophthalmology and in their lives beyond the clinic.

The Museum of Vision wants to especially acknowledge the numerous American ophthalmologists who have served as members of Congress, state legislators and local politicians. We wish we could recount all the stories related to ophthalmologist politicians, but for the sake of space we can only thank each of them for their service.

It should be noted that initially Beyond Ophthalmology, Beyond the Clinic explored not only physicians who became acclaimed in other fields, but also those who earned notoriety. It was determined that mentioning these names would diminish the achievements of the men and women we have highlighted here so they have been purposefully left out.
