Commemorative medal designed by Jose M. C. Antunes of Portugal. Obverse features a portrait of Dr. Charles C. Sherrington with the dates 1857 and 1952. Inscription reads "PREMIO NOBEL DA MEDICINA / 1932 PELA SUA DESCOBERTA SOBRE A FUNCAO DAS CELULAS NERVOSAS." Dr. Sherrington was awarded the Nobel Prize for his work on the function of neurons and in ophthalmology is known for his experiments in reciprical innervation of the extraocular muscles and perceptual processes involved in binocular vision.
