Description

Unsigned pencil and ink drawing. Depicts 3 central figures wearing broad hats similar to Chinese bamboo horn hats and 4 sketched or shadowed figures in front of Western style buildings. Drawing is titled "Colledge Ophthalmic Infirmary / Muoa". Dr. Thomas R. Colledge (1796-1879) founded the Colledge Ophthalmic Hospital on the island of Macao (off the coast of China) in 1827. A British trained physician and missionary, he remained in Macao until 1838. Sketch of schooner on reverse.
